Drowning in Abundance: How Infinite Storage Broke the Way We Find Our Own Files
There's a folder on your hard drive — or maybe buried three levels deep in your cloud account — called something like "Misc 2" or "Old Stuff (2)" or just "TEMP" that has somehow survived every cleanup effort you've ever attempted. Inside it: a tax form from 2019, seventeen screenshots of memes you definitely intended to send someone, a half-finished résumé, and a file called "notes.txt" that contains exactly one line you no longer understand.
You saved all of it because storage was cheap. And now you can't find a single thing you actually need.
Welcome to the file hoarder's paradox — the strange modern condition where having effectively unlimited space to keep everything has made it exponentially harder to locate anything.
The Scarcity Mindset That Actually Worked
Ask anyone who was doing serious digital work in the late '90s or early 2000s how they organized their files, and you'll hear something surprising: they were meticulous. Not because they were naturally tidy people, but because they had no choice.
A 1.44MB floppy disk doesn't forgive sloppiness. Neither does a 20GB hard drive when you're editing video. When every megabyte had to earn its keep, people developed real systems — folder structures with actual logic, file names that meant something, archives that got pruned regularly.
"Constraint is one of the most underrated design tools we have," says Marcus Delray, an information architect based out of Chicago who has spent the last decade helping companies reorganize their internal file systems. "When people had limited storage, the act of saving something was a decision. Now it's a reflex. And reflexes don't produce organized systems."
That shift — from intentional saving to reflexive saving — is at the core of the problem. The mental overhead of deciding whether to keep something used to force a parallel decision about where to put it. Strip away the first question, and the second one quietly disappears too.
Decision Paralysis at Scale
Behavioral economists have a name for what happens when you face too many options: choice overload. It was famously illustrated by the "jam study" from Columbia University, where shoppers presented with 24 varieties of jam were far less likely to actually buy anything than those shown just six options.
The same principle applies to your downloads folder, just with less delicious consequences.
"When storage is unlimited, every file faces a zero-friction save," explains Dr. Priya Nandakumar, a behavioral economist at a research consultancy in Austin who studies digital decision-making. "But retrieval is never zero-friction. You've essentially transferred all the cognitive cost from the moment of saving to the moment of searching — and that's a terrible trade."
The math is brutal. Saving takes two seconds. Finding something you saved carelessly three years ago can take twenty minutes — if you find it at all. Multiply that across thousands of files and you've created a system that costs you more than it saves, even if the storage itself is free.
The Naming Convention Collapse

Folder Entropy and the Infinite Nest
If bad naming is the symptom, folder chaos is the disease. Given unlimited space and no real pressure to organize, most people's directory structures evolve in one of two directions: the infinite nest or the flat dump.
The infinite nest looks organized from the outside — folders within folders within folders, taxonomies that seemed to make sense in 2021 but have since been abandoned in favor of a new system that lives alongside the old one rather than replacing it. The flat dump is exactly what it sounds like: everything in one or two folders, sorted by nothing.
Both strategies fail in the same way. Neither reflects how you actually think when you're trying to find something. Real retrieval is associative — you remember a file by what it was for, not where you put it. Good organization mirrors that mental model. Most people's actual folder structures don't come close.
Constraint as a Feature, Not a Bug
So what actually works? Counterintuitively, some of the most productive digital organizers are the ones who artificially reimpose limits on themselves.
Nandakumar points to research on "commitment devices" — tools people use to restrict their own future choices in order to produce better outcomes. Applied to file management, this looks like enforced folder caps (no folder holds more than 50 files), mandatory naming conventions with date stamps and project codes, or regular scheduled purges where anything older than a certain date gets reviewed and either archived or deleted.
"The goal is to make the save decision feel like a decision again," she says. "Even a small amount of friction — even just requiring yourself to put a file in a specific folder before it can be saved — changes the cognitive relationship you have with your storage."
Delray's recommendation for teams is even more blunt: build your shared drive structure first, before you start accumulating files, and make it shallow. Three levels of nesting maximum. If something doesn't fit in three levels, that's a signal you need a new category, not a new subfolder.
