Dead on Arrival: The File Formats Quietly Erasing Your Family's Digital History
There's a specific kind of grief that doesn't have a name yet. It's the feeling you get when you dig out an old hard drive, plug it in with anticipation, and discover that half the files on it are completely unreadable — not corrupted, not deleted, just... stranded in a format that the modern world no longer speaks.
This is happening to millions of Americans right now. Quietly. Without warning labels.
The Formats That Already Lost
Let's start with the obvious casualties. Kodak's Photo CD format — once the gold standard for digitizing family snapshots in the early '90s — is effectively dead. The .pcd extension still exists, but finding software that opens it natively in 2025 requires the kind of archaeological patience most people don't have. Same story with FlashPix, a format pushed hard by Kodak, Microsoft, and Hewlett-Packard in the late '90s that vanished almost overnight when JPEG ate the world.
Then there's the Broderbund Print Shop format, the AppleWorks document, the early Nokia phone image format .nol. And don't even get started on early digital video — .rm RealMedia files, early .wmv variants encoded with proprietary codecs, QuickTime files that rely on components Apple quietly stopped shipping years ago.
Digital archivist Priya Nair, who works with a regional library system in the Pacific Northwest, puts it bluntly: "People assume that because something is digital, it's permanent. That's exactly backwards. Physical photographs degrade slowly over decades. A file format can become unreadable in five years if the ecosystem around it collapses."
The Ecosystem Problem
Here's what makes format death so sneaky: it's rarely the format itself that dies first. It's the software.
When Adobe stopped bundling support for certain legacy formats in newer versions of Photoshop, millions of .psd files from the early 2000s suddenly became harder to open. When Apple transitioned away from Rosetta, a whole generation of Mac-native applications stopped running, taking their proprietary file formats with them. When Flash died — and it really did die, completely, in December 2020 — it took with it an enormous body of interactive content, educational software, and yes, personal projects that people had stored as .swf files thinking they were safe.
The pattern is always the same: a company discontinues support, an operating system moves on, and suddenly your files are speaking a language nobody teaches anymore.
"It's like linguistic extinction," says Marcus Webb, an independent digital preservation consultant based in Austin who has worked with both corporate clients and individual families trying to recover personal archives. "When the last fluent speaker dies, the language is gone. When the last piece of software that reads a format stops running, those files become artifacts."
What's Dying Right Now
If you want to know which formats are currently in the danger zone, here's the uncomfortable truth: some of them are formats you're probably still using.
HEIC — Apple's default photo format since iOS 11 — is already creating headaches for Windows users and anyone trying to archive images for long-term access. It's not dead, but it's proprietary-adjacent in ways that should make you nervous.
RAW formats from older digital cameras are increasingly fragile. Camera manufacturers each have their own RAW variant (.nef for Nikon, .cr2 for Canon, .arw for Sony), and while major ones are still supported, older proprietary RAW formats from discontinued camera lines are already becoming orphaned.
Office document formats from before 2007 — the old .doc, .xls, .ppt formats — are increasingly problematic. Not dead yet, but the fidelity of what you get when you open them in modern software is often degraded in ways you might not immediately notice.
And .swf is already gone. If you have Flash projects saved anywhere, they are already unreadable without specialized workarounds.
What Happens to Personal Archives
The stakes here aren't abstract. They're deeply personal.
Consider what's stored in formats from the 2000s and early 2010s across American households: first baby photos taken on early digital cameras, home videos recorded on now-unsupported camcorder formats, family documents scanned and saved as TIFF variants with proprietary compression, creative projects built in discontinued software.
Webb describes working with a family in Ohio who had over 12,000 photos from a decade of family life — birthday parties, graduations, holidays — stored on a series of CD-ROMs in Kodak Photo CD format. "They couldn't open a single one of them on any computer they owned. That was their entire visual record of their kids growing up, just locked away."
They got lucky. With professional help, most of the files were recovered. Most families don't seek that help until it's too late.
What You Can Actually Do
The digital preservation community has been screaming about this for years, and the core advice hasn't really changed — but most people still haven't heard it.
Migrate to open formats. JPEG and PNG for photos. MP4 with H.264 for video. PDF/A for documents. These aren't glamorous choices, but they're formats with open specifications that don't depend on any single company's continued goodwill.
Keep multiple copies in multiple places. The 3-2-1 rule is old but still solid: three copies, two different media types, one off-site. A local drive, an external backup, and a second location (whether that's cloud or a physical drive at a relative's house).
Convert proactively, not reactively. Don't wait until you can't open something to deal with it. Set a reminder to audit your personal archives every couple of years and convert anything in a format that's showing signs of ecosystem decay.
Use open-source tools. Software like HandBrake for video, GIMP for images, and LibreOffice for documents tends to maintain broader format support than commercial alternatives, precisely because the community has an interest in keeping old things readable.
Nair recommends the Library of Congress's digital preservation resources as a starting point for anyone who wants to go deeper. "They publish sustainability assessments for file formats," she says. "It's not light reading, but it'll tell you exactly which formats they consider high risk."
The Bigger Picture
There's something worth sitting with here. We are the first generation in human history to have a detailed visual and documentary record of our everyday lives — and we are also the first generation to discover that this record is shockingly fragile in ways we didn't anticipate.
Your grandparents' physical photos are yellowing, sure. But they're still photos. They're still readable by anyone with working eyeballs. The HEIC files on your phone right now are readable today. Whether they'll be readable in thirty years depends entirely on decisions being made in corporate boardrooms you'll never have a vote in.
That's not a reason to panic. But it is a reason to act. The files you care about aren't going to preserve themselves.
